UNDERSTANDING PLACE
In Person course - Deemouth Artist Studios Project Space, Torry, Aberdeen. Friday 17th August
2pm – 4:30pm

Level: Beginner/Intermediate.
Join Fiona for this workshop and explore together how we can better understand the places around us.
Participants will be invited to spend some moments grounding themselves within the outdoor space on the riverside a short walk from Fiona’s studio before an introduction to journalling and sketch booking techniques and prompts that can help you to mindfully explore the site.
Through these exercises we will create moments for intimate investigations of what surrounds us – what can you see if you really slow down to notice? What ideas may emerge about your place, your relationship to it and what might you learn or discover?
To close the workshop participants are invited to share their findings and have some final reflections before leaving with a more activated connection to our natural world.
You will cover the following techniques:
- Grounding Techniques
- An introduction to Nature Journalling
- Mindful Sketching
- Free Writing.
- Pattern and Texture Drawing exercise.
Materials to bring with you: For this course all materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring along your own sketchbook and sketching equipment if you wish.
Light refreshments will be provided. The day will include a short tea/coffee break.

Please take a moment to read our cancellation policy before you book: Unfortunately, our in person classes are non-refundable. Due to our small class sizes it is also very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to fit you in on another date but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances.
In the event that we are forced to cancel a class, we will endeavour to give you as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or swap your booking to another suitable date.
Please note: This workshop will involve walking from my studio on uneven ground. My studio and toilets are located up two flights of stairs. Please contact me in advance of booking if you have any accessibility requirements.
